Kettle Foods continues to support Star Throwers

Star Throwers would like to thank Kettle Foods for supporting Star Throwers through their staff community support scheme ‘Kettle Cares’.

A cheque for £215 was presented to Star Throwers and this donation allows Star Throwers to purchase and use an oxygen tank at the Wymondham centre for 2 years.

In April 2010 Kettle Foods also generously donated £100 to Star Throwers, so that some garden furniture could be purchased.

Sainsbury's continue their support

Each year Sainsbury’s help a charity with in-store promotions and money raising ideas and this year they are supporting the work that we are doing at Star Throwers.

Recently Star Throwers founder, Henry Mannings gave a presentation to staff at the Longwater store about what Star Throwers is doing at the Centre in Wymondham. The presentation described Star Throwers alternative treatments and therapies for people who were suffering with cancer, as well as  helping their friends and relatives to cope with the problems they face supporting their loved ones.

To date, staff at Sainsbury's Longwater have donated £500 and some much needed bed linen and general houseware. In addition, one staff member has helped with a bucket collection on a Saturday night and 10 members of staff at the Longwater store helped with the gardening and painting the Summer House.

The thanks of all the volunteers and visitors goes to the wonderful staff and Sainsbury's Longwater for your continued enthusiasm and support.

Local sport lovers support Star Throwers again

Our thanks again go to Les King and the many generous sports fans at the recent football fixture between Wymondham Town F.C. and Dereham Town F.C., who raised an amazing £850 for Star Throwers.

Mr King who is 'Life President' of Wymondham Town F.C. and also Hardingham Cricket Club, visited Star Throwers last week to present us with the cheque and said "I'm very pleased that I live locally and that Star Throwers is in Wymondham. I think it's a very good cause for me to help."

All of the volunteers and visitors to Star Throwers are so generous to Mr King and the supporters at local sports events for their continued support of the work that we are doing.

Sainsbury's get stuck-in at Star Throwers

Star Throwers are thrilled to be the Sainsbury's of Longwater Charity of the Year for 2011, but were even more impressed and grateful on Sunday the 7th of August, when staff from the popular supermarket joined forces with Star Throwers volunteers to help with clearing the garden and the driveway and also to get the new summerhouse painted at the charities HQ in Wymondham.

They also enlisted the help of 'Tony the Bear', (see picture left). Tony the Bear is a money making Sainsbury's staff idea, who they all take him on holiday for a week and pay £5 (or £1 for a day trip).

He has already appeared on stage at the Theatre Royal Norwich, featured in a Devizes passing out parade, enjoyed Joyland at Yarmouth for a ride on the funfair and has just returned from a holiday in Greece! In the 3 weeks that the scheme has been running Tony has raised over £200.

Although the Gardening Day was a hard one  (except for Tony!) - a good time was had by all.

Sportspark donation

Sportspark has made a £700 donation to Star Throwers. This donation was raised by Sportspark customers.

After visiting the centre, Keith Nicholls, Director of Sportspark said “Star Throwers is an inspirational organisation doing a wonderful job of helping care and support for local people and their families when they need it. I’m very pleased we are able to support such a community focused project, thanks to the money raised by our generous customers.

The money has been raised by Sportspark customers who have made small donations in return for copies of the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News, through a promotion in conjunction with Archant. Donations of £700 have already been given to six other charities and self help groups over the last year.

Everyone at Star Throwers would like to say a massive thank you to all Sportspark staff and customers for this wonderful donation, which will help massively with the work that we are doing.

Wymondham College Sixth Form net some cash for Star Throwers

Wymondham College Sixth Form held a charity netball fundraiser on Tuesday April 12th with staff, students and former students taking part.

Many who came to watch the tournament also donated money and a small refreshment stall also helped to raise a fantastic £1010.

Charity week at the college in July involved all the houses taking part with such events as cake baking and keep-fit week. This raised an additional £802.22, which is a fantastic effort so can we say a very big thank you to Wymondham College and all the staff and pupils who have helped to raise so much money for Star Throwers to use in its charity work.

Summerhouse completed

Many thanks to Steve Hayes (pictured) for all his hard work with construction of the decking and the wonderful summerhouse, both of which he has kindly donated. The area to the rear of the building is now a very pleasant space to sit and enjoy the garden, as well as a tranquil area to relax.

Pictured outside the finished article are Mary, Sunder and Corby - photographed by Vanessa, who make up the Wednesday morning crew!

Make your valuable token gesture at Wymondham Waitrose

Waitrose in Wymondham is helping shoppers to support Star Throwers throughout February through the store's charity token scheme.

Every month, shoppers are given a token at the checkout, which they can place in one of three boxes at the exit. Each box is allocated to a different cause, and the share of the monthly "pot" of £1,000 a charity receives is directly proportional to the number of token votes from customers.

The community scheme from Waitrose will donate £2.28 million to 6,840 local charities and good causes over the next 12 months, as chosen by its customers and employees.

So have a root around in those shopping bags, handbags and in the car for all those tokens and help the work that Star Throwers is doing by visiting the Wymondham Waitrose in February and putting your token in the Star Throwers token box.

Thank you to Waitrose and everyone who supports Star Throwers through this great scheme.

Why not also drop-in to the Star Throwers centre on Melton Road, or give us a call on 01953 423304 and buy one of our re-usable fabric shopping bags!

A brief tribute to Julie Beardmore

Julie_BeardmoreThis wonderful woman came to Star Throwers when we needed someone to help us on the administrative side as we had evolved much faster than anticipated.

Her presence was immediately apparent as she worked to improve the office side. She was highly respected by one and all for her organisation skills, ability to interact with all the volunteers and her humour.

Sadly, she passed away suddenly following a short illness but we will never forget her input to our charity and she was a true Star Thrower.
